A variety of advancements have been made in orthodontic dentistry over the past several years, and one example of that improved technology is apparent with TADs (temporary anchorage devices). A TAD is simply an implant that is used to temporarily anchor orthodontic appliances. Dr. Pendleton is pleased to offer this option to his patients from throughout the Leander, TX, area.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT TADS
TADs are just what the name implies – temporary implants that are used strictly for the purpose of anchoring an orthodontic appliance in place. The implants are typically made of titanium. The process involved in implanting a TAD is relatively simple and quick. After treatment, the TAD is removed. In the past, orthodontists had to rely on headgear to move teeth. But relying on patients to actually wear headgear – particularly very young patients – was a challenge, to say the least. Thankfully, TADs make the task of moving teeth much easier for everyone involved, especially the patient.
ADVANTAGES OF TADS
Although the use of TADs does require an extra step in the teeth straightening process, the benefits make it well worth the additional procedure. Before TADs were used, orthodontists often had to extract one or more premolars in order to create enough space inside the patient’s mouth. But TADs can now be used to provide anchorage support for moving teeth, meaning that extraction of premolars is no longer necessary.
Since the TAD technology is so reliable, Dr. Pendleton no longer has to depend on the patient to consistently wear the headgear that used to be necessary to move and straighten teeth. The TADs ensure that the teeth will move! This means that the total length of treatment time is often shortened thanks to TADs.
Another huge advantage for the patient is obvious: there’s no need for headgear! This is not only more comfortable for the patient, but also less embarrassing. And let’s face it, wearing headgear can be painfully embarrassing for kids and teenagers.
