Early Interceptive Orthodontics

Dr. Pendleton encourages parents of young children to bring those children in early – by the age of six or seven — if they notice a potential problem related to the child’s teeth. Dr. Pendleton has plenty of first-hand experience when it comes to childhood orthodontic procedures. He went through what is referred to as “two-phase” treatment when he was a child, which included wearing braces twice. Because of that experience, Dr. Pendleton has developed a somewhat conservative approach to early interceptive orthodontics. Rather than encouraging or discouraging early treatment, Dr. Pendleton makes his recommendations on a case-by-case basis and only suggests treatment if “red flags” are present in the child. Because he feels so strongly about making the right choices when it comes to early interceptive orthodontics, Dr. Pendleton invites Leander, TX, area parents to bring in their children for a free consultation so you can help make the best decisions for your kids!

HOW YOUR CHILD MAY BENEFIT FROM EARLY INTERCEPTIVE ORTHODONTICS

Although Dr. Pendleton will only recommend early interceptive orthodontic procedures when he feels they are absolutely necessary, there are several benefits that this treatment can provide to young patients:

  • Correct bite problems (over bites, under bites, cross bites)
  • Eliminate and/or modify oral habits harmful to your child’s oral health
  • Reduce the length of time required for later orthodontic treatment – or eliminate the need for later treatment altogether
  • Prevent “crowding” of permanent teeth

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED EARLY INTERCEPTIVE ORTHODONTICS?

Dr. Pendleton wants to stress the importance of only deciding whether or not your child will benefit from early interceptive treatment after he examines your child and speaks with you directly about the advantages and disadvantages. Still, there are some cases where early treatment might be more warranted, such as children with the following issues:

  • Severe “crowding” of teeth (i.e., too many teeth for the size of the mouth)
  • Children with an open bite who suck their thumbs or engage in other habits such as breathing through their mouths or tongue thrusting
  • Kids with a narrowed upper jaw
  • Severe bite problems, such as over bites or under bites
